Choosing Nethan for a Lifestyle Blog Redesign

Sitting at my desk with a fresh cup of coffee, I opened the design file for a lifestyle blog that needed a new visual identity. The client had shared their vision: something timeless, elegant, and slightly nostalgic. It was the kind of project that made me reach for my font library, searching for that perfect typeface that could capture the mood without being too modern or too old-fashioned. That’s when I found Nethan.

Nethan is a vintage styled display font that carries a quiet confidence. Its curves are soft but deliberate, and its structure feels like it belongs in a mid-century book cover or a beautifully aged letterpress print. What stood out to me wasn’t just its look, but how it carried itself—like a well-worn leather journal that still has pages left to fill.

A Font with Character

The first thing I noticed about Nethan was its rhythm. Each letter flows into the next with a subtle grace, making it feel both refined and approachable. It doesn’t shout; it invites. This made it ideal for use as a header on the blog’s homepage, where it would welcome readers with a warm, inviting presence.

I experimented with using Nethan for article titles and section headers. The way it held attention without overwhelming the content was remarkable. It didn’t distract from the writing—it elevated it. When paired with a clean sans serif font for body text, the contrast was perfect. The vintage character of Nethan provided a nice counterbalance to the simplicity of the supporting typefaces.

Practical Uses for Nethan in Editorial Design

Nethan isn’t just for headers. I found it worked well for pull quotes, chapter openers, and even decorative accents in sidebars. Its versatility made it a go-to choice for different sections of the blog redesign. For instance, when designing a feature on vintage home décor, Nethan felt like the natural fit for the headline and subheadings.

Another moment I loved was when I used it for the blog’s newsletter graphic. The font gave the newsletter a touch of sophistication that aligned perfectly with the brand’s voice. It wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was about creating a cohesive reading experience that felt intentional and thoughtful.

For longer-form content, I made sure to use Nethan sparingly. While it’s a display font, it works best in short bursts of text where impact matters more than readability. In this case, it was perfect for headlines, callouts, and title blocks, but not for body copy.

Readability Across Formats

One of the things I always consider when choosing a font is how it will perform across different formats. Will it render well on mobile screens? How does it look in print? And what about PDF exports?

Nethan handled all of these scenarios quite well. On screen, it maintained its elegance without becoming too small or difficult to read. In print, the font retained its character and clarity, which was especially important for the printable guides the blog planned to offer. Even in PDF format, the font remained consistent and legible, ensuring that the reader’s experience stayed uninterrupted.

Font Pairing and Practical Considerations

When working with a display font like Nethan, it’s essential to pair it with a complementary typeface that ensures readability. For the blog redesign, I chose a classic serif font for body copy. This combination created a balanced hierarchy—Nethan for emphasis and storytelling, and the serif font for comfort and continuity.

I also took note of the font’s features. The PUA encoding meant that there were alternate characters available, which added a layer of customization. I used them for special accents and decorative elements, enhancing the overall design without compromising the font’s usability.

Before finalizing the design, I checked the licensing details to ensure that Nethan could be used across all the intended platforms—web, print, and digital downloads. The commercial license covered everything we needed, giving me peace of mind and allowing the client to move forward confidently.

As I wrapped up the project, I couldn’t help but admire how Nethan brought the blog’s new design together. It wasn’t just a font—it was a statement. A quiet one, but one that spoke volumes about the care and intention behind the editorial choices.
